    Your child will be required to take eight courses: four core content classes, one advisory class, and three electives.

    Yes, all ninth-grade students will be required to take the EOC exams for Algebra, Biology, and English I.

    Yes, 9th grade students will have the opportunity to take a 9th grade yearbook class.

    Yes, Eastwood Middle will follow the small learning communities model.  This means that all teachers are responsible to provide interventions to ensure that students are successful.

    Yes, we are currently looking at the roll out plan for Engage Me for 2017-18.  There is a plan in place that will allow for 9th graders at EMS to have their individual device.  Students may also bring their own device as well.

    Yes. Eighth-grade students taking courses for high school credit, such as Algebra I and Spanish, may be in a class with ninth-grade students.

    No. It is not possible for seventh-grade students to take classes with ninth-grade students, as there are no high-school courses available for seventh-grade students.

    Current eighth-grade students will begin course requests in November 2016 with the help of their middle- and high-school counselors. Online registration for parents and students begins in January 2017.

  • What will athletics look like for 9th grade students?

    All sports will be offered for the 9th grade students.  There will be an activity bus for students to transport them to the EHS so that they may practice with the team or group as needed.  For the most part, 9th grade sports will be housed at EMS.  Individual sports such as golf, tennis, swimming and gymnastics will be housed at the high school.

  • Will my ninth-grade child be allowed to participate in marching band?

    Yes. If your child is in band, they will be marching with the EHS band. The band conducts morning practices before first period. Your child will need to report to EHS for early band practice, and then will be transported to EMS before first period by a YISD bus. Your child will be asked to follow the band practice schedule as provided by Eastwood High School.

    Yes. If your child is a Trooperette, practice will take place at EHS before first period. The Trooperette class takes place during first period at EHS – therefore, your child will be at EHS for first period, then transported to EMS for second period by a YISD bus. Your child will be asked to follow the Trooperette practice schedule as provided by Eastwood High School.

    We will provide 9th grade students opportunities to participate in pep rallies during the school year.  We will also have pep rallies at EMS as well.

    Yes, we will have athletic trainers.  Students that are interested in participating as an athletic trainer will need to attend practices and games that correspond to the level of their assignment.

    The freshman and junior varsity teams will be practicing at Eastwood Middle School.

    We are finalizing our options for the varsity baseball team.

    All students will have the opportunity to try out for varsity sports.  If your child earns a spot on a varsity level team, he/she will be provided transportation to allow him/her to practice/play on the varsity team.

    Currently, EHS has 2,224 students.  EMS has 1,036 students but can accommodate for 1,562 students.  EMS is projected to have 1,527 students next year with the 9th grade students.  EHS is projected to have 1, 690 students next year.

    The capacity at Eastwood Middle is at 1,563 students.  We will monitor enrollment at each grade level to ensure that we do not exceed capacity.

    Your child will remain at EMS for the ninth-grade year only. They will attend Eastwood High School for 10th-12th grade. The construction project will be completed in Fall 2019.

    The current 8th grade students that will be at EMS during the 2017-18 school year will return to Eastwood High as 10th graders.  Students will be attending classes in the portables up until December 2018.  The three- wing building should be ready for occupancy in January 2019.  When students start their Junior year of high school in 2019-2020, the renovation of Eastwood High School should be completed.

    We are very confident that the construction project will be delivered on time.  If by some chance, we see that there will be a delay, we will continue to keep the 8th grade students at Eastwood Middle for another year.

    Yes, both campuses (Eastwood Middle and Eastwood High School) will be staffed appropriately according to District guidelines and policies.
